Kathmandu is a beautiful city with temples, monuments, historical sites and colourful culture. It is the best destination for family holidays with their kids.

All trips to Nepal start and end in Kathmandu, as the only international airport is here. Kathmandu is a large and vibrant city that can seem overwhelming upon arrival. But in the heart of Kathmandu, one finds Thamel bearing the bazaar. Here are friendly hotels, shops, and restaurants. The streets in the centre are blocked by traffic, making it easier to move around here. As Kathmandu houses many historical attractions, we recommend spending a few days here, so there is plenty of time to see it all. Among the sights to see in Kathmandu, we can mention Boudhanath stupa and Swayambhunath (also known as the monkey temple); these large white dome-shaped buildings with Budha’s eyes looking out over the city are a fantastic experience.

The Pashupatinath temple complex by the river, where the Hindus in Kathmandu burn their dead and send them out on their last journey, is a fantastic experience, especially towards dusk; there is an extraordinary atmosphere here.

In addition, there are the three royal squares, Durbar square, Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur, packed with historic buildings and shrines where you can be lucky to meet Kumari, the living goddess, and enjoy a good lunch in tranquil surroundings.

You can also take several day trips from Kathmandu, such as a day trip to the Namobuddha Monastery, where you can experience the daily life of the Buddhist monks.

Pokhara

PokharaEven though Pokhara has grown significantly over the past few years, the town at the bank of Phewa lake still bears the mark of serene days. Many small, easy treks, including the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek, start from Pokhara. The town is centred on the main lakeside street along the beautiful lake. There are good restaurants, shopping opportunities, and boat rentals along the whole lake, so there is ample opportunity for a boat trip there.

Pokhara is also the paraglider’s paradise, the weather conditions are good, and the surroundings, with the Annapurna Range in the background, are gorgeous.

On the opposite side of the lake, you can visit the World Peace Pagoda, from which the views of the lake, the city, and the Himalayan mountain peaks are indescribably beautiful.

Chitwan and Bardia

On a day trip from Kathmandu to the south of Nepal, you will find these serene areas characterised by jungle and warmer skies. Here you can go on a jungle safari or canoeing and experience a great variety of birds, monkeys, rhinos, crocodiles, and if you are very lucky, maybe a tiger. These areas are very suitable for more minor children. The towns are characterised by quiet village life, and the accommodation will be at a resort where the children can play in the garden, and you can walk to the river and eat ice cream and drink a cup of coffee.

Trekking in Nepal

If you want to experience the feeling of trekking, several treks are particularly suitable for children. These treks are of shorter duration than the major classic treks, have lighter routes, and move at heights without the risk of altitude sickness. Taking the family on tour provides an excellent opportunity for high-quality time with the family. You get a guide and porters who care for everything so you can enjoy the trip, the beautiful surroundings, and each other. Of course, some physical shape is an advantage, and the children should not be too small, but the routes are organised so that most can join without great effort.

Adventure Activities

Several activities should satisfy everyone if you have bigger children, want more speed over the field, and dabble in the experiences. Paragliding, River rafting, and Bungee jumping are examples of this.

The Nepalese cuisine

The national dish in Nepal is Dal Bhat, which most locals eat at least twice a day. At the restaurants, however, you will find a wide selection of food inspired by the surrounding countries, such as Tibet, India, and China, as well as Western-inspired food, such as pizza, burgers, etc. So you do not have to worry that you cannot find something the children like on the dining card.

Transport

Transport in Nepal can be challenging, but you should consider it an experience. A bus trip between Kathmandu and Pokhara is probably set to approx. It takes seven hours but can easily take 9, so spend a day and enjoy the experiences it provides. If you are too impatient or pushed by a tight schedule, you can choose to fly domestically. Alternatively, you can rent a car with a driver to decide where and when to take breaks.
