Conspectus Itineris
If you are looking for an exceptional off-road adventure into one of the most geographical wonders of the world, then welcome to our Mustang ATV tour.
This tour is here to redefine your Himalayan exploration, offering an experience unlike any traditional trekking, motorbike, or standard jeep tours.
What makes our Mustang ATV tour so unique is the use of an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) in the extraordinary terrain of Upper Mustang, within the beautiful Annapurna region.
This vehicle delivers the exhilarating thrill of a motorbike along with the stability of 4WD vehicles, enabling it to traverse steep, rugged Himalayan terrain, canyons, and passes.
On our ATV tour in Nepal, you won’t just be a passive passenger; you will be an active traveler, managing the machine and conquering the dry, difficult landscape of Mustang.
So, if you like to experience mechanical adrenaline, want the freedom to travel, and wish to have deep cultural connections with the Loba people of Mustang, then you mustn’t delay in joining our Mustang ATV tour any longer.
Our Mustang ATV tour starts from the lush subtropical cities of Kathmandu and Pokhara. You will then travel in a private jeep through the lower Mustang terrain of Jomsom beside the narrow gorge of Kali Gandaki, the world’s deepest.
It is now time for you to ignite your ATVs and traverse the Upper Mustang landscape. Your first interesting stop on our Nepal ATV tour will be at the Chungsi Cave of Guru Rinpoche, where he meditated on his way to the Himalayas.
Then, shifting to low gear on your ATV, you will cross the Syangboche La pass (3800 m) and Nyi La Pass (4100 m) to reach the old Tibetan village of Dhakmar.
The highlight and the challenge of our Mustang ATV tour arrive when you will have to expertly maneuver your ATV to conquer the high passes of Mui La (4170 m) and Marang La (4230 m) to reach Lo Manthang.
On the way, you will also explore the historic Ghar Gumba, which dates back to the 8th century and stands as a significant monument of ancient Buddhist tradition.
Gazing at the glistening faces of Tilicho, Nilgiri, Bhrikuti, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri peaks, you will reach the Walled Capital of Lo Manthang, founded in 1380.
Here, you will get an extra day of exploration when you discover its numerous ancient monasteries and the Shija Jhong cave complex in the Chhoser Valley.
But wait, our Mustang ATV tour is not over yet, and we have one more surprise in store for you. From Lo Manthang, you will also journey on your ATV to the 4600 m Kora La Border between Nepal and Tibet.
You will also reach the hidden and lonely caves of Kunchokling and Samdzong. Then, powering through the 4050 m high Ghara La Pass on your ATV, you will traverse the pastoral terrain of Yara to arrive at Jomsom.
Our Mustang ATV tour comes full circle as you travel back to Kathmandu via Pokhara.
This action-packed tour is ideal if you crave adventure, an extra dose of adrenaline, freedom, and authentic cultural encounters. You will enjoy our Mustang ATV tour best in spring and autumn, as well as during Nepal’s monsoon season.

Why ATVs for our Nepal ATV tour?
ATVs are regarded as the ultimate all-terrain vehicles, perfectly suited to the complex terrain of Upper Mustang. With ATV, you will have a perfect balance between mechanical excitement and rugged utility.
With ATV in this tour, you will have the following benefits:
- You can go anywhere in Upper Mustang, to any corner, such as Kunchokling and Samdzong. Unlike massive jeeps, ATVs have a narrow body that can easily run along a single dirt track or riverbed.
- Unlike a two-wheeled motorbike, an ATV has four wheels and a slender body, along with robust traction and stability that allow it to traverse loose rocks, ridges, loose gravel, and riverbeds with ease.
- Since you will be handling your machine, you will be an active traveler, riding in the open air and managing your vehicle on your own.
- You will be free from the grueling, long treks and will be able to cover long distances in a short amount of time, thus allowing you to explore the whole region of Upper Mustang that remains hidden from the traditional traveler.

Dies 03: Drive from Pokhara to Jomsom, 2720 m, and ATV ride to Kagbeni, 2800 m, Chungsi to Dhakmar, 3820 m, 45 km off-road, 7 to 8 hours
From today, our true ATV tour in Nepal begins. We will leave the green terrain of Pokhara and step into the desert terrain of Upper Mustang. Our morning starts with an adventurous jeep ride to Jomsom.
From Pokhara, the Prithvi Highway will lead us southwest to connect with the Baglung Highway. We will then encounter Kushma town, which hosts one of the longest suspension bridges and the world’s highest commercial bungee-jumping cliff.
The paved highway will travel us through Beni, situated beside the massively deep Kali Gandaki gorge, the world’s deepest. The dirt track will begin now, which will ascend us through Tatopani and Rupse Chhahara (Rupse Waterfall) at Dana.
The bumpy dirt road will turn left and journey through the delightful Thakali towns of Ghasa, Tukuche, Lete, Kobang, Kalopani, and Marpha before we arrive at Jomsom.
The moment has come to switch to our ATV; powering its engine, we will ride east along the dry, bumpy track and pass through Ekle Bhatti. We will soon be at Kagbeni, where the police checkpoint will examine our permits.
We will now ride past the gate of Kagbeni and enter the restricted region of Upper Mustang. Admiring the horizon, the massive edges of Annapurna I, Tukuche, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri, we will power up our ATV and ride steeply along the dusty track.
We will climb past the Tangbe (3020 m) and Chhuksang villages (2980 m). The terrain has now taken the dark brown hue as we proceed towards Chele (3055 m).
The uphill dusty dry off-road track will now climb us steeply through Lhatse (3100 m) and over the two giant dry passes of Taklam La (3624 m) and Dajori La (3650 m).
Stop the roar of your ATV and watch the flute-like features of Tilicho and Yakawakang peaks for a while. It’s time to ride down to Samar village (3600 m).
We will take an off-road detour towards Chungsi Cave, which is also known as Ranchung Cave, perched at 3500 m elevation. Our ATV will ride us down through a dramatic canyon for a while until we reach the adequate site where we can park our ATV.
We will then take a short scenic hike to the Chungsi Cave, which is regarded as deeply sacred by the locals because of its legendary story related to Guru Rinpoche.
He said to meditate in this cave around the 8th century during his journey into the Himalayas. Inside the cave, we can look at several clay statues and amazing rock formations.
We will now trek back to our machine and power back up its engine. We will ride out of the canyon and conquer the high Syangboche La pass (3800 m).
Watching the unreal peaks of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri, we will drop down to Ghiling village (3570 m). numerous traditional Upper Mustang villages such as Tama Gaon, Chhunggar, and Jhaite (3811 m) will give us some comfort of rest before we advance over the Nyi La Pass (4010 m).
The up and down dusty off-road track will again ride us steeply over 3765 m Ghami La Pass before we descend to Ghami Village. We will now ride past the longest Mani Wall of the Mustang region and engage in a jaw-dropping descent to Dhakmar Village, where we will park our ATVs and rest for the night.

Dies 04: ATV ride from Dhakmar to Lo Manthang, 3840 m, via Ghar Gumba, 35 km off-road, 5 to 6 hours
Today, our Mustang ATV tour will lead us to the ultimate destination of our entire adventure: the walled old kingdom of Lo Manthang. The day will be a true test of our ATVs as we ride deep into the high alpine terrain of Mustang and remote mountain passes.
We will leave Dhakmar village and shift our ATVs to low gear. Then, we will climb along the rocky terrain, cross slowly and carefully the high Mui La Pass (4170 m).
We will park our machine at the summit for a moment and admire the beauties known as Annapurna and Dhaulagiri rising high above the orange-tanned terrain of Mustang.
Turning the engine back on, we will now drop down slowly into the peaceful valley of Ghar Gumba (3835 m), also called Lo Ghekar Monastery, which has stood in this terrain since the 8th century.
Built by Sage Rinpoche, the monastery houses dozens of well-preserved clay statues, stone plaques of Buddhist deities, and scriptures of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava).
After the short monastery visit, we will fire up our engines once more and descend through high-altitude dry terrain towards Tsarang village (3505 m).
The pointy sharp edges of Tilicho, Nilgiri, Bhrikuti, and Annapurna I will delight our ride as we climb alongside the yellowish Charang Chu canyon. We will come across a large chorten before we are set to climb over the huge Marang La Pass (4230 m).
After tackling this ridge, we will descend to the wide and open valley floor, from where we will head to Lo Manthang. This small hidden kingdom was founded in 1380 and is still encircled by around 6 m tall white walls.
After riding into the entrance gate of the kingdom, we will park our machines and set to rest in this amazing medieval land.

Dies 05: Rest and exploring Lo Manthang in ATV
We have a strategic rest day planned in Lo Manthang today, but we will use this day to explore the hidden heritage of this beautiful dry kingdom. We will use our ATVs for our sightseeing tour and will explore the ancient sky caves and surroundings.
After a warm royal breakfast, we will press our ignition and ride our ATVS to explore the ancient heritage Tibetan monasteries of Thugchen, Lhakhan Champa temple, and the Chyodi monastery.
Then, we will ride north for around an hour toward the most famous Chhoser Valley. Our goal is the Shija Jhong Cave situated high on the cliff. It has been one of the most researched archaeological sites in Asia and has 5 floors and 40 rooms.
Climbing along the wooden ladders, we can look at each chamber of the cave and admire the ancient wall paintings and pottery. Then, we can also visit the Nyiphuk and Garphu rock Monasteries located near the cave.
It’s now time to ride back to our accommodation in Lo Manthang and call it a day.

Dies 06: ATV ride from Lomanthang-Chung Jung to Kora La Border, 4600 m-Kunchokling-Samdzong, 3900 m-Yara, 3610 m, 7 to 8 hours
Early morning, after a warm royal breakfast, we will now fire up our ATVs and head north. It’s a great time to see once again the ancient archaeological wonders of the sky cave of Chhoser Valley on our way to the Chung Jung village.
The trail will become narrower and ascend along the plateau. We will pass through Nhichung (3951 m) village, where we will come across the Nepali Border Customs and Port Facilities.
Once across this village, our track will now flatten out, and a little further we can see a lonely ancient Buddhist stupa. From here, the dramatic dry terrain heads up to the Kora La pass (4660 m) lying near the Tibetan border with Nepal.
We will take our ATVs to the edge of the dry plateau and watch the incredible isolated terrain of Tibet. We will now descend the pass and turn back from the border. Next, we will divert from the main track and head southeast toward the eastern bank of the Mustang Khola.
The terrain now becomes more and more rugged, and there will be numerous mountain ridges to overcome. Thus, we will have to rely on the suspension of our machine. We will park our ATV on a high mountain ridge and then hike to the Kunchokling cave.
Inside the cave, we can see stunning 14th-century Buddhist murals, ceiling mandalas, and meditation chambers. After the cave exploration, we will fire up our machine once again and descend along a steep technical dirt track.
It will then ascend along the high mountain pass known as Samdzong La (also referred to as Gongmoche La, 4050 m). We will now ride down the pass and reach the canyon floor.
Now, there will be a massive mud cliff ahead of the trail, which again contains several 1500-year-old ancient sky caves. From here, we will ride down our ATVs and reach the valley floor.
The ride on our machine is somewhat easier now as we proceed further and come across the lonely structures of Old Samdzong. Soon enough, we will be resting our ATVs at the green valley of Samdzong.
After a momentary break, we will mount our machine and hit the wide track beside the Samdzong Khola. After a while, our trail will sharply head up where we will have to shift to low gear to cross the Ghara La Pass (4380 m).
From the pass, our long descent begins toward the Puyung Khola valley, from where our track will lead us to the Ghara Village. From here, we will descend to Yara Gaon, where we will park our ATV and rest for the night.

On the way, we will ride past the Siyarko Tangk Danda and Chhomnang villages before we ride into the Chhusang village. We will now ride south beside the wide bank of Kali Gandaki and eventually reach Kagbeni.

Mustang ATV Tour Additional Information
Optimus Season
Because the Upper Mustang sits in the Himalayan rain shadow, you can engage in a Mustang ATV tour not only in spring and autumn but also in the monsoon season in Nepal.
However, the ideal period will be between September and November (autumn), when the terrain will be absolutely dry and stable, and the air and visibility will be crystal clear, with splendid views of the Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna peaks.
Another favorable time will be between March and May (spring), which offers mild daytime temperatures, clear morning skies, and less intense winds.
Between July and August, heavy rain will occur in Kathmandu and Pokhara, but Upper Mustang will remain dry, with occasional cooling rain, creating a perfect riding environment.
Please avoid the winter months of December, January, and February, as Upper Mustang will be extremely cold and experience heavy snowfall on higher passes.
difficulty Level
The Nepal ATV tour is rated a strenuous Himalayan off-road journey that demands strong physical stamina, focus, and prior experience riding ATVs or dirt bikes independently.
While the tour doesn’t need you to be a professional rider, it certainly is not suitable for absolute beginners. If you are new to off-road adventures, we strongly suggest that you gain experience in off-road journeys and handling dirt bikes or ATVs on the mountain terrain.
Another challenge you will face on our ATV tour in Nepal is the altitude, which reaches 4600 m at Kora La Pass. Operating an ATV at such an altitude can be physically very tiring.
Additionally, the terrain of Upper Mustang features steep canyons, gorges, sudden bends, and multiple high passes, where expert handling of your machine, along with excellent focus, is essential.
Quis hoc potest participare?
Riders with experience handling dirt bikes on high, rugged mountain trails can easily manage the multi-day rides included in our Mustang ATV tour.
As for the age limit, riders must be between 18 and 60 years of age and in good physical health and stamina. If you are a minor under 18 years of age, you must be in the company of your parents or guardian.
Likewise, you must also possess a valid international driving license that allows you to drive a motorbike and car legally.
Please kindly note that individuals with severe asthma or cardiovascular or respiratory illness are not eligible to participate in our Nepal ATV tour unless they have a doctor’s permit.
Incolumitatem et Security
My Everest Trip is highly conscious of your utmost safety and security during this tour, and so we provide you:
- 4 by 4 support jeep that will follow you behind, carrying your main luggage, spare parts, fuel, and an emergency medical kit.
- Our medical kit contains first-aid medicines, an oximeter, and portable oxygen cylinders to help manage mild symptoms of altitude sickness.
- We will also provide you with on-site mechanics to handle any unexpected issues with your machine, such as tire punctures or engine problems.
- An expert licensed rider guide who will set a safe pace for you in the tour, along with looking after your safety, managing communication, and guiding you on the safest trail.
- Satellite communication for immediate and uninterrupted urgent communication in the event of any emergency medical urgency and helicopter evacuation.
Morbus Altitudinis/AMS et Acclimatisatio
Our Mustang ATV tour changes altitude rapidly, starting from the low plains of Jomsom and ultimately leading you to the 4600 m elevation of Kora La Pass.
Thus, the occurrence of altitude sickness or Acute Mountain Sickness/AMS is quite probable in our tour. Considering the risk of AMS, we have therefore placed adequate acclimatization strategies in our itinerary.
During the entire riding period of our Mustang ATV tour, we won’t rush; instead, we’ll set a gradual pace so we can naturally adjust to the increasing altitude.
We will also stay in Lo Manthang for two nights before pushing our ATV to the Kora La Pass, so we will be fully acclimatized by the time we reach the tour’s maximum elevation.
Our guide will also continue to monitor your blood oxygen levels and physical health. If you show any minor signs of AMS, such as headaches, dizziness, or nausea, he will immediately manage your symptoms by administering oxygen and Diamox to treat and prevent them.
If your physical health does not improve, our support jeep will immediately transfer you to a safer, lower-altitude location until you are able to return to the track.
In a very rare case of serious AMS, our guide will coordinate your immediate helicopter evacuation to Kathmandu via satellite communication.
Essential Training and Preparation
Our ATV tour in Nepal is a high-altitude off-road adventure that can be quite physically exhausting if you are not prepared and adequately trained.
Therefore, we suggest you prepare adequately and appropriately for this tour 4 to 6 weeks ahead of your journey with the following activities:
- Focus on improving your cardiovascular health through aerobic exercises such as cycling, running, walking, or swimming.
- Handling an ATV requires solid upper-body strength, which you can build through planks, push-ups, pull-ups, shoulder presses, and weightlifting.
- Managing ATV also needs core leg strength, so also do squats and lunges.
- Also, practice on an ATV (if feasible) or ride dirt bikes and teach yourself to maneuver these machines on dirt roads. Familiarize yourself with their brakes, controls, suspension, shifting gears, and changing body weight in sudden bends and corners.
- Practice standing up when riding and properly leaning into sharp turns.
- Also, pay attention to your essential protective gear, such as goggles, a jacket, and a helmet.
Hospitium, Cibaria, et Potus
My Everest Trip will offer you twin rooms in clean, comfortable, and perfectly safe three-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Your room will feature modern utilities such as a hot shower, WiFi, an in-room bathroom, and AC.
On the trail of Upper Mustang, we will arrange for you the absolute best lodges or mountain teahouses that will offer you clean, cozy twin-sharing rooms with comfortable bedding and utilities.
As for meals, we offer breakfast in Kathmandu and Pokhara, along with three hearty meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) on the trail.
Eggs, porridge, bread, Dal Vat, noodles, pasta, fried rice, chowmen, thukpas, and fresh momos will be the common menu on the road. Kindly note that alcoholic beverages and canned soft drinks are not included in the cost of the Mustang ATV tour.
If you have any dietary preferences, please notify us so our team can coordinate with the lodge kitchen to provide you with clean, hygienic food.
Transportation
Along with high-performance ATVs and a 4×4 support vehicle for the tour, we will also offer you private airport transfers (internal and international), a domestic mountain flight between Kathmandu and Pokhara, or a private jeep transfer between the two cities (based on your choice), and a ground transfer between Pokhara and Jomsom in a private jeep.
Peregrinatione insurance
Kindly note that travel insurance is mandatory for our Mustang ATV tour to obtain the required permits and for your safety. Your travel insurance for this tour must be specialized with the following coverage:
- High altitude coverage up to 5000 m that covers you financially for your ride up to the Kora La Pass
- Emergency helicopter evacuation in the remote terrain of Upper Mustang in the event of any unexpected injuries, serious AMS, or accidents
- Off-road ATV riding coverage on Nepal mountain trails
- Third-party liabilities in case of any accident to a pedestrian, local villagers, another rider, or damage to the property on the trail
- ATV damage coverage in case of any physical damage to the ATV due to your negligence
- Baggage and gear protection coverage along with extra stays, flight delays, or tour cancellation
Permits Essential
Upper Mustang is a restricted territory where standard permits are not enough. Traveling here in any form requires a specialized restricted-area permit, which can only be arranged through a legally registered Nepali travel agency like My Everest Trip.
You must also be a part of a prearranged tour accompanied by a government-licensed guide. However, the old minimum requirement of two travelers traveling in a group has been lifted as of March 22, 2026.
Here is the list of permits that we need for our Mustang ATV tour:
- Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit/RAP: This permit will allow you to get past the Kagbeni checkpoint into the territory of Upper Mustang. The Nepalese government has made a significant change to the permit cost, which used to be a flat USD 500 per person for 10 days. According to the new rule, the cost is USD 50 per person per day, regulated under a pay-as-you-go system.
- Annapurna Conservationem Area Sine (ACAP); Because Upper Mustang lies within the pristine, conserved territory of Annapurna, we also need the ACAP, which costs a flat fee of NPR 3000 per person.
We will handle 100 percent of the paperwork and costs on your behalf.
