5 Top Attractions of the EBC Trek

Lukla Airstrip

The adventure begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla for the 14-day EBC trek, as well as the standard 12-day Everest Base Camp trek. This will make you feel like an old-world explorer. Leaving Kathmandu behind, you quickly escape to a world of snow, rock, and deep green valleys. As you approach the Lukla airstrip, your excitement grows because you know this is where your trek begins.

The Lukla airstrip will not disappoint even the most seasoned traveler. It clings tightly to the mountainside, and the pilot’s skill is on full display as they land perfectly and glide to a stop in front of Lukla. Already high enough to be in the clouds at times, you start to see shimmering peaks far above and deep valleys plummeting below.

Namche

Along your trek, you will also reach the famous Namche Bazaar on the luxury EBC trek. Here, you leave the forested valleys behind and enter the Khumbu region. You will also join the Sagarmatha National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Namche Bazaar is the unofficial capital of Khumbu and home to the Sherpa people.

The Sherpas are Tibetan, as evidenced by their delicious food, art, culture, and language. Try local foods like Thukpa (a Tibetan noodle soup). This warming soup is excellent on a cold day. Or try Rigi Kur (a potato pancake), topped with yak butter or cheese. The Sherpa trading market on Saturdays is a must-see for small souvenirs, and the Tibetan Ancient System Museum showcases medicine that remains widely popular.

Tengboche Monastery

You will visit Tengboche Monastery, a famous monastery in a small village along your trek. Typical of this area is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, where a Rinpoche (an extraordinary lama or monk) is known to bestow blessings on pilgrims and trekkers alike who visit Chomolungma (Mt. Everest in Tibetan).

It is the largest monastery in the Khumbu region and central to Sherpa religion, where people gather for religious festivals, particularly Mani Rimdu.

During this festival, lamas or monks dance in the courtyard between October and November amid clashing cymbals and undulating horns. The festival lasts three days, with cypress and yak-butter bonfires burning through the night.

The monastery sits in a village of the same name, where you will get incredible views of Ama Dablam towering above the monastery and town. You can see both Lhotse and Mount Everest in full view.

Kalapatthar

Kalapatthar is a must-do on your Everest Base Camp trek. Along the trek, you’ll stay in Gorakshep. From this outpost, you can climb a small knoll called Kalapatthar, which means black rock in Nepali.

1 Day
Easy

Although it’s a short hike, most people don’t give it the respect it deserves and rush to the top. All trekkers at Gorak Shep are still acclimatizing, so take your time and don’t push too hard. But the effort is worth it! From the summit, you’ll see Mt Everest, along with Nuptse, Changtse, and Lhotse. Leave Gorak Shep early enough to watch the sunrise behind Everest.

Everest Base Camp

The trek also culminates in a hike to EBC (Everest Base Camp) on the Everest short trek. It is a strenuous climb through the glacial moraines to Everest Base Camp; however, standing at the foot of the mighty Everest, with the skyline filled with snow-capped peaks, is the experience of a lifetime.

Everest Base Camp is the destination, but for others, it is the starting point of a more remarkable journey to conquer the world’s highest peak. In April and May, EBC is a hive of activity as climbers and guides attempt to summit Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak.
