Charity in Nepal – “My Everest Library” Initiative
At My Everest Trip, tourism should have a positive and lasting impact on the communities we visit. As part of our commitment to responsible and meaningful travel, we’ve launched a charitable program called the “My Everest Library” initiative—a year-round effort to improve access to quality education for children in rural Nepal.
Nepal’s remote mountain communities are home to resilient, kind, and welcoming people who inspire travelers worldwide. However, despite their rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, many of these regions face deep-rooted challenges, especially regarding education. Rural areas often lack the resources, staff, infrastructure, and materials needed to offer a proper learning environment for children. Schools may operate with minimal funding, and children often study without necessities such as books, paper, or writing instruments.
This is where the “My Everest Library” initiative steps in. Our goal is simple but powerful: to create a meaningful bridge between our guests and the communities they visit by encouraging small acts of giving that make a big difference. We collect children’s books (in English) and school supplies such as pens, pencils, notebooks, and drawing materials throughout the year. These are distributed to local schools and children’s homes across the regions where we trek.
What makes this initiative unique is that it is entirely guest-powered. We invite each of our travel guests to join us in this cause by bringing along a small contribution—just a few books or supplies in their luggage can go a long way. These items are then gathered and delivered annually to schools and orphanages near our trekking routes, including areas in the Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang regions. No matter how modest, every contribution helps spark imagination, improve literacy, and support a child’s educational journey.
Not every traveler can contribute physically, so we also welcome monetary donations. These are used to purchase needed materials locally, which not only supports children’s education but also helps the local economy.
The feedback we’ve received from communities has been profoundly moving. Children in these remote areas often experience joy and excitement at receiving their very first storybook or set of colored pencils. Teachers have shared how even a slight supply boost can significantly enhance classroom engagement and attendance. And for our guests, contributing to the My Everest Library initiative often becomes one of the most rewarding aspects of their journey through Nepal.
Our long-term vision is to grow this initiative beyond just distribution. We aim to establish mini-libraries and learning corners in rural schools, provide teacher training support, and eventually introduce mobile library services to even more remote communities.
We believe education is the foundation of sustainable development, and with your support, we can help build that foundation—one book, one pencil, and one child at a time. By joining hands with us, travelers don’t just witness the beauty of the Himalayas; they become part of a shared mission to uplift the lives of the people who call these mountains home.
We invite you to join the My Everest Library if you plan a trek with My Everest Trip. Together, we can leave behind more than just footprints—we can leave behind hope, opportunity, and the tools for a brighter future.
