Day 01

Travel From Kathmandu to Kerung (Tibet)

Your spiritual journey begins with a stunning overland ride from Kathmandu to the Nepalese hills and then onwards to the high-altitude landscape of Tibet via the Kerung border. This border road between Nepal and Tibet provides a comfortable and scenic drive. We will start early in the morning on a picturesque drive from Kathmandu to Kerung, Nepal-China border. We travel along two highways: Prithvi Highway and Pasang Lhamu Highway, tackling rough, wiggly roads in the hills.

As we head higher up the mountains, the distant Himalayas gradually appear, giving out spectacular scenes. We will eventually arrive in Syabrubesi, traversing the stunning landscapes of Langtang National Park. From here, it is a short one-hour drive to the border region of Rasuwagadhi.

Upon arrival at the border, you have to present documents (Chinese Visa and Tibet Travel Permit) for entering Tibet. After completing customs and immigration formalities on both the Tibetan and Nepalese side, we proceed to Kerung town. At entry into Tibet, you can observe the breathtaking transformation of landscape and culture. The trip links the green and fertile territory of Nepal with the extreme, arid worlds of the Tibetan Plateau. Reaching Kerung, the scenery outside us is even more beautiful with wide green meadows and precipitous cliffs.

Second Day of Kora - Zuthulpuk via Drolma La Pass

The second day of Mount Kailash Kora is a challenging but spiritually satisfying part of the trek. Set off early in the morning from Dirapuk and ascend continuously up to the Drolma La Pass (5,634 meters), which is the top point of the Kora. The trail is somewhat rugged and requires reasonable physical strength and a powerful state of mind.

Along the way, you will pass by the holy site Shivatshal, where the pilgrims offer their personal belongings like clothes, locks of hair, or drops of blood that symbolize ego dropping. Eventually, you will reach the top of the Drolma La with rainbow colored prayer flags flapping in the wind and a deep feeling of accomplishment taking hold.

Once you have crossed the pass, the way down is steep, which you must tackle cautiously. Moving downwards, you will traverse the peaceful Gauri Kund, popularly referred to as the Lake of Compassion. This glacial lake is of great religious significance, which is said to be worshiped by the goddess Parvati. The landscape keeps changing as you proceed with the path leading you through the valleys that course along stony ridges and irregular streams. Complete Kora and Return to Saga

On the final day of Mount Kailash Kora, you will begin your hike from Zuthulpuk Monastery with a light breakfast and a newfound sense of accomplishment. Today’s trail is very straightforward compared to the previous day. You will walk on a wide, flat trail along the river valley, passing through stunning meditation caves and mani walls. As you gradually walk towards the direction of Darchen, the south face of Mount Kailash slowly falls behind. After about 10 kilometers of walking, your Kora is finished on arrival at Darchen.

You will then board your vehicle at Darchen and begin the journey back to Saga, which lies at the confluence of two mighty rivers: the Brahmaputra and the Indus. The return trip takes you once again through the same desolate and dramatic natural beauty you saw earlier, such as rolling plains, snow-capped mountains, and vast stretches of the Tibetan plateau.

Along the way, you again cross Lake Manasarovar and possibly see nomads or yak herds grazing in the distance. You can stop briefly at green pastures or tranquil lakes, absorbing the pristine natural beauty of the area. By evening, you will arrive at Saga for an overnight stay in a hotel.

Return Drive to Kerung

Following a pleasant evening at Saga, you begin to drive back towards Kerung via the same path over the expanse of the Tibetan plateau. The journey provides the last chance to soak in the breathtaking views of high-altitude plains, lakes that sparkle in the sun, and white, hooded mountains. Along the way, you can pause for a while to enjoy the scenery of isolated monasteries and mountain passes decorated with multi-hued prayer flags.

As you gradually move down to lower altitudes, the air thickens and the vegetation becomes greener. The waterfalls pouring down the cliffs and the winding gorges mesmerize you. Cool, moist air and lush greenery act as a balm to western Tibet’s dry weather. Kerung is probably the last place in Tibet where you can sit back, just relax, and soak in the astounding beauty of the Himalayas; the right stopover before you continue your journey to Nepal.

Together, Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar constitute one of the holiest pilgrimage routes on earth. Thousands of pilgrims flock to the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour annually in the hope of completing the sacred Kailash Parikrama, a ritualistic circumambulation of the mountain believed to cleanse sin and confer spiritual merit. The trek is filled with locations of immense power, such as Rakshas Tal, Hapath, Nandi, Tirthapuri, Ast, and the massive Kailash Kora itself. Approaching the realm of Mount Kailash is a blessing, and to find oneself amidst such sacred sites is heaven on earth.

Tibet Visa Info

The Chinese government enforces laws prohibiting solo travel in Tibet. To travel there, you must be accompanied by an organized tour led by a government-licensed travel agent qualified to arrange the numerous travel permits and documents.

Based on the latest regulation by the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, tourists seeking a Tibet Group Visa should be part of a minimum group of five members. The visa application with biometric submission to the visa application center in Kathmandu requires the original passport and will take around 4 to 5 working days.

We handle the Tibet Travel Permit when you book your trip with us. Our experienced staff handles the application from beginning to end, making it easy and trouble-free. You must forward us scanned copies of your passport and Chinese visa in advance. Once we receive your documents, we will apply for the permit from the Tibet Tourism Bureau.

Altitude Sickness During This Holy Journey

Altitude sickness is something not to take lightly on the Kailash Mansarovar Tour due to its massive elevation gain. Because the tour will pass through parts very much above 2,500 meters where altitude symptoms will generally begin, the possibility of experiencing sickness from the thin air becomes greater. The body takes time to acclimatize to the lower oxygen levels, especially when ascending to areas like Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash.

During this Tibetan odyssey, you will travel to high-altitude points with the maximum elevation being Drolma La Pass at 5,634 meters during Mount Kailash’s Kora (circumambulation). The higher you ascend, the less air pressure exists, and it is more difficult for your body to absorb oxygen properly.

This can show in symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, fatigue, nausea, and insomnia. To reduce the risk, it is necessary to ascend slowly, stay well hydrated, eat light and healthy meals, and abstain from such substances as alcohol and tobacco.

If you have any medical conditions or issues, visit a medical professional before traveling. They can prescribe medicines like Diamox, which enables the body to acclimate quickly and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.

Best Time for Mount Kailash Yatra

The best season to undertake the Kailash Tour is during the late spring to early autumn months, i.e., May to September. The climate is relatively more stable than at other times, and the high passes are relatively more straightforward to access. The temperatures are milder and the weather is clearer.

The atmosphere is refreshing and crisp, imparting a rejuvenating touch to the entire travel experience. These months are also part of the peak pilgrimage season, and you get to be a part of the spiritual journey along with other fellow devotees from around the world, which makes it a more cultural and communal experience.

In the peak of springtime in May, watching blossoms and fresh leaves against the backdrop of the landscape adds a shot of color to the Tibetan land and renewal to the scene. Likewise, in late September, the forest areas across the region exhibit a range of rich colors: reds, oranges, yellows, and browns, creating an enchanting atmosphere.

You can enjoy the wide-screen scenery of the Tibetan plateau without rushing. The gentle heat of the sun renders it comfortable for walking, sightseeing, and photography. June or July is when the auspicious Saga Dawa festival is celebrated to mark the enlightenment of Lord Buddha. Pilgrims flock in large numbers during this time, giving out a spiritually charged atmosphere that makes the experience all the more special.
