10 Days Kailash Mansarovar Tour Itinerary

Day 01

Travel From Kathmandu to Kerung (Tibet)

Your spiritual journey begins with a stunning overland ride from Kathmandu to the Nepalese hills and then onwards to the high-altitude landscape of Tibet via the Kerung border. This border road between Nepal and Tibet provides a comfortable and scenic drive. We will start a picturesque drive from Kathmandu to Kerung, the Nepal-China border. We travel along the Prithvi Highway and the Pasang Lhamu Highway, tackling rough, wiggly roads in the hills.

As we head higher up the mountains, the distant Himalayas gradually appear, providing spectacular scenes. We will eventually arrive in Syabrubesi, where we will traverse the stunning landscapes of Langtang National Park. From here, it is a short one-hour drive to the border region of Rasuwagadhi.

Upon arrival at the border, you must present documents (a Chinese Visa and a Tibet Travel Permit) to enter Tibet. After completing customs and immigration formalities on the Tibetan and Nepalese sides, we proceed to Kerung town. Upon entering Tibet, you can observe the breathtaking transformation of the landscape and culture.

The trip links the green and fertile territory of Nepal with the extreme, arid worlds of the Tibetan Plateau. Reaching Kerung, the scenery outside us is even more beautiful with broad green meadows and precipitous cliffs.

Day 03

Drive to Saga

With an early morning breakfast in Kerung, the ride begins down winding mountain roads that slowly ascend into the high, open Tibetan highlands. The landscape will slowly lose its forest cover and become more arid. The green hillside gradually gives way to a vast area of rocky terrain and high plains with snow-capped summits towering in the distance.

En route, you will cross Thong La and La Lung passes, broad mountain ridges topped with views of the surrounding peaks and valleys over the expanse of the Tibetan plateau. When the day is clear, mighty Shishapangma, one of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks, will likely come into view.

You will drive past the serene Peiku Tso Lake, resting at 4591 meters. The blue waters of this lake, framed by mountain reflections, offer a peaceful moment amidst Tibet’s boundless wilderness.

The journey continues through remote landmarks such as Khunmen Tso, Sinling, and Karru Ongchen, eventually crossing the mighty Brahmaputra River (locally known as Yarlung Tsangpo). Saga is one of the key resting points for travelers and pilgrims en route to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. Upon arrival, you can check in at your hotel and rest well after the long drive.

Drive to Lake Mansarovar

The ride to Mansarovar takes you deeper into the heart of the Tibetan plateau. You will pass over expansive valleys, salt lakes, and rough highland terrain. The drive winds through Tibet’s vast, high-altitude plains, dotted with herds of yaks and sheep grazing beneath a backdrop of snow-draped mountains. The air thins when we ascend higher, and frequent stops are necessary for rest and acclimatization.

Mansarovar Lake is one of the world’s highest freshwater lakes, sitting at an altitude of 4,590 meters. This sacred pilgrimage site draws thousands of pilgrims annually. Visitors can spend a few minutes reflecting, meditating, or strolling leisurely on the lakeshore, collecting holy water and engaging in ritual purification.

The dazzling turquoise waters of the lake reflecting the lofty Mount Kailash and Gurla Mandhata are awe-inspiring and humbling. You will stay overnight in an adjacent guesthouse with enough time to relive the day’s events, get warm, and relax.

First Day of Kailash Kora - Reach Dirapuk and Kailash Charan Sparsh

Day one of Mount Kailash Kora (circumambulation) starts. Following a wholesome breakfast at Darchen, you will trek up over the vast plain along the Lha Chu River valley. As you move forward, you will have magnificent views of the arid Tibetan landscape ruled by white capped mountains, rocky ridges, and yak pastures.

Pilgrims gather to walk this sacred path together, chanting prayers and rotating prayer wheels. After several hours of trekking, you will reach Dirapuk where the north face of Mount Kailash comes into full, majestic view. It is a home to the ancient Dirapuk Monastery (Zhire Temple), which sits at the base of Mount Kailash’s western slope.

Those who are physically fit and willing can take a detour for Kailash Charan Sparsh, a short but challenging climb toward the base of the holy mountain. Charan Sparsh is touching the feet of Mount Kailash, which is a sacred and highly spiritual experience. It is believed to cleanse the soul and bestow blessings upon you. You will return to Dirapuk for the night in a guesthouse amidst the peace of the high Himalayas and the spirituality enshrouding Kailash.

Second Day of Kora - Zuthulpuk via Drolma La Pass

The second day of Mount Kailash Kora is a challenging but spiritually satisfying part of the trek. Set off early in the morning from Dirapuk and ascend continuously to the Drolma La Pass (5,634 meters), the top point of the Kora. The trail is somewhat rugged and requires reasonable physical strength and a powerful state of mind.

Along the way, you will pass by the holy site Shivatshal, where the pilgrims offer personal belongings like clothes, hair locks, or blood drops that symbolize ego dropping. Eventually, you will reach the top of the Drolma La with rainbow colored prayer flags flapping in the wind and a deep feeling of accomplishment taking hold.

Once you have crossed the pass, the descent is steep, which you must tackle cautiously. Moving downwards, you will traverse the peaceful Gauri Kund, popularly referred to as the Lake of Compassion. This glacial lake is of great religious significance, and the goddess Parvati is said to worship it.

The landscape changes as you proceed with the path leading you through the valleys that course along stony ridges and irregular streams. By late afternoon, you will arrive at Zuthulpuk Monastery, where the great Tibetan yogi Milarepa is believed to have meditated. Here, you will rest for the night in a guesthouse.

Day 08

Complete Kora and Return to Saga

On the final day of Mount Kailash Kora, you will begin your hike from Zuthulpuk Monastery with a light breakfast and a newfound sense of accomplishment. Today’s trail is very straightforward compared to the previous day. You will walk on a wide, flat trail along the river valley, passing through stunning meditation caves and mani walls.

As you gradually walk towards the direction of Darchen, the south face of Mount Kailash slowly falls behind. After about 10 kilometers of walking, your Kora is finished on arrival at Darchen.

You will then board your vehicle at Darchen and begin the journey back to Saga, which lies at the confluence of two mighty rivers: the Brahmaputra and the Indus. The return trip takes you through the same desolate and dramatic natural beauty you saw earlier, such as rolling plains, snow-capped mountains, and vast stretches of the Tibetan plateau.

Along the way, you again cross Lake Manasarovar and possibly see nomads or yak herds grazing in the distance. You can stop briefly at green pastures or tranquil lakes, absorbing the area’s pristine natural beauty. By evening, you will arrive at Saga for an overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 09

Return Drive to Kerung

Following a pleasant evening at Saga, you begin to drive back towards Kerung via the same path over the expanse of the Tibetan plateau. The journey provides the last chance to soak in the breathtaking views of high-altitude plains, lakes that sparkle in the sun, and white, hooded mountains. Along the way, you can pause to enjoy the scenery of isolated monasteries and mountain passes decorated with multi-hued prayer flags.

As you gradually move to lower altitudes, the air thickens and the vegetation becomes greener. The waterfalls pouring down the cliffs and the winding gorges mesmerize you. Cool, moist air and lush greenery are a balm to western Tibet’s dry weather. Kerung is probably the last place in Tibet where you can sit back, relax, and soak in the astounding beauty of the Himalayas; the right stopover before you continue your journey to Nepal.

Additional Information of Kailash Mansarovar Tour

Why Take a Kailash Mansarovar Trip?

Mount Kailash is a religiously sanctified site to followers of Hinduism, Buddhism, and the Bon religion. Mount Kailash is the cosmic hub of the universe where godly energy resides. As per Hindu culture, it is where Lord Shiva (God of all Gods) abides eternally with his wife Parvati in meditation.

Nearby is the pristine Lake Mansarovar, which is considered to be Brahma’s soul creation. It is believed by Buddhists to be the home of Buddha Demchok (Chakrasamvara), the embodiment of the highest bliss, and by followers of the Bon religion as the center of spiritual energy.

Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar constitute one of the holiest pilgrimage routes on earth. Thousands of pilgrims flock to the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour annually to complete the sacred Kailash Parikrama, a ritualistic circumambulation of the mountain believed to cleanse sin and confer spiritual merit.

The trek is filled with the locations of immense power such as Rakshas Tal, Tirthapuri, Asthapath, Nandi and the massive Kailash Kora itself. Approaching the realm of Mount Kailash is a blessing, and to find oneself amidst such sacred sites is heaven on earth.

Who Can Join the Kailash Mansarovar Tour?

The Kailash Tour is open to spiritual travelers, cultural enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and nature lovers alike. Travelers from all countries drawn by Mount Kailash’s spiritual aura and the mystical beauty of the lakes and the Himalayas can join this transformational journey.

Whether you are a pilgrim seeking an inner spiritual journey, a photographer seeking stunning views, or a tourist seeking to immerse yourself in Tibetan culture, this tour is an experience of a lifetime.

This journey is suitable for solo travelers, families, couples, and groups of any age, from young travelers to old explorers. Although there is no rigid age limit, visitors should be physically and mentally fit to travel at high altitudes. As long as you are in reasonably good health, you can fully enjoy the trip.

You must be mindful of the altitude change, stay hydrated, and dress in layers to adjust to the region’s volatile climate. With adequate preparation, the experience is comfortable and enriching.

Kailash Mansarovar Tour Cost

Kailash Mansarovar Tour Package starts from USD 1,855. However, the cost varies from person to person depending on their nationality. The following table sums up the different costs for the Kailash Mansarovar tour:

Group Size Kailash Mansarovar Tour Cost per person
4 to 5 USD 1,855 per person
6 to 9 USD 1,755 per person
10 to 14 USD 1,555 per person

Where is Kailash Mansarovar Located?

Kailash Mansarovar is located at the western tripoint of China, India, and Nepal. The mountain is in the Ngari Prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region, China. The mountain range is located in the Gangdise Mountains of the Trans-Himalaya. It is primarily located within the Tibetan Plateau. The lake is close to Mansarovar and Rakshasatal lakes. The mountain also contains four rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Karnali, Indus, and Sutlej.

Moreover, since the Kailash mountain range is close to the Indian border, many perceive the mountain as being in India. The Kailash region was never a part of the Indian empire. However, the mountain’s location has been confused due to its religious significance and the association of Hinduism with India. Regardless, you can access the hill from India, resulting in a less time-consuming journey.

Do we need Travel Insurance for the Kailash Mansarovar Tour?

Yes, travel insurance is required for Mount Kailash Yatra. Due to the high altitude and isolation of the trip, good cover is essential to make the pilgrimage comfortable and trouble-free.

Travel insurance is usually vital for the following reasons:

  • The Kailash Parikrama reaches altitudes of more than 5,000 meters, with no medical facilities, and emergency services are expensive. On becoming ill or injured, evacuation by helicopter can be costly. Insurance protects you in the event of such emergencies.
  • Insurance compensates for nonrefundable fees if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • Insurance compensates you in case of lost or delayed luggage, so you don’t have your essentials.

Ensure your insurance covers:

  • High altitude trekking over 5,000 meters
  • Airlift if necessary.
  • Medical bills
  • Trip cancellations or interruptions
  • Lost or delayed baggage

Since the Tibet Kailash pilgrimage takes place in the mountainous terrain and under varying weather conditions, being insured will make you less anxious, and you can focus entirely on the religious and cultural experience. Proper travel insurance lets you enjoy your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra with peace of mind and confidence while ensuring financial security and safety throughout the journey.

Tibet Visa Info

The Chinese government enforces laws prohibiting solo travel in Tibet. To travel there, you must be accompanied by an organized tour led by a government-licensed travel agent qualified to arrange the numerous travel permits and documents.

Based on the latest regulation by the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, tourists seeking a Tibet Group Visa should be part of a minimum group of five members. The visa application with biometric submission to the visa application center in Kathmandu requires the original passport and will take around 4 to 5 working days.

We handle the Tibet Travel Permit when you book your trip with us. Our experienced staff handles the application from beginning to end, making it easy and trouble-free. You must forward us scanned copies of your passport and Chinese visa in advance. Once we receive your documents, we will apply for the permit from the Tibet Tourism Bureau.

Altitude Sickness During This Holy Journey

Due to the massive elevation gain on the Kailash Mansarovar Tour, altitude sickness is not to be taken lightly. Because the tour will pass through parts very much above 2,500 meters, where altitude symptoms generally begin, the possibility of experiencing sickness from the thin air becomes greater.

The body takes time to acclimatize to the lower oxygen levels, especially when ascending to areas like Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash. During this Tibetan odyssey, you will travel to high-altitude points, with the maximum elevation being Drolma La Pass , which is 5,634 meters during Mount Kailash’s Kora (circumambulation). The higher you ascend, the less air pressure exists, making it more difficult for your body to absorb oxygen properly.

This can show in symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, fatigue, nausea, and insomnia. To reduce the risk, it is necessary to ascend slowly, stay well hydrated, eat light and healthy meals, and abstain from such substances as alcohol and tobacco. If you have any medical conditions or issues, visit a medical professional before traveling. They can prescribe medicines like Diamox, enabling the body to acclimate quickly and reduce the risk of getting altitude sickness.

Best Time for Mount Kailash Yatra

The best season to undertake the Kailash Tour is from late spring to early autumn, i.e., May to September. The climate is relatively more stable than at other times, and the high passes are relatively more straightforward. The temperatures are milder and the weather is clearer. The refreshing and crisp atmosphere imparts a rejuvenating touch to the entire travel experience. These months are also part of the peak pilgrimage season, and you get to be a part of the spiritual journey along with other fellow devotees from around the world, which makes it a more cultural and communal experience.

In the peak springtime of May, watching blossoms and fresh leaves against the backdrop of the Tibetan landscape gives the scene a shot of colorfulness and renewal. Likewise, in late September, the forest areas across the region exhibit a range of rich colors: reds, oranges, yellows, and browns, creating an enchanting atmosphere. You can enjoy the wide-screen scenery of the Tibetan plateau without rushing.

The gentle heat of the sun makes it comfortable for walking, sightseeing, and photography. In June or July, the auspicious Saga Dawa festival is celebrated to mark Lord Buddha’s enlightenment. Pilgrims flock in large numbers during this time, creating a spiritually charged atmosphere that makes the experience all the more special.
