Trip Overview

The Short Mardi Himal Trek is one of the most beautiful short trekking routes in Nepal’s Annapurna region. It is ideal for people who intend to enjoy the Himalayan mountains but cannot afford a lengthy trek. This trek combines green forests, serene ridge paths, traditional villages, and breathtaking mountain scenery, all in a few days.

The Short Mardi Himal Trek is a relatively short and fulfilling walk, and, thanks to its attractive views and associated benefits, it has become an obvious option for those with little to no trekking experience.

The trek typically starts in Pokhara, a well-known lakeside city and the gateway to the Annapurna trekking region. It is only a short drive out of Pokhara to Kande, where the trekking trail begins. It winds slowly up through the terraced agricultural areas and small villages, then into the exquisite woodlands of oak, bamboo, and rhododendron.

The Short Mardi Himal Trek is popular because it offers a wonderful Himalayan experience in a short duration. This trek attracts many travelers because it offers beautiful mountain scenery, serene walks, and comfortable days of walking. Within 4 days, trekkers can step into the green forests, along the ridge trail, and to a high viewpoint, enjoying the natural beauty of the Annapurna region.

The close-up of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) and panoramic view of the Annapurna range are among the key features. The view of the sun rising at Mardi (4,200 m / 13,780 ft) is particularly unforgettable.

Another factor that has made it popular is its quieter trail compared to other routes. The Short Mardi Himal Trek is an easy-to-start trek that begins in Pokhara and offers cozy teahouse lodging along the way.

As you continue walking up the hill, the landscape gradually transforms into open alpine ridges with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

A close view of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) is one of the greatest attractions of the Short Mardi Himal Trek. This walk is steep, with bumps along the trail, and offers exciting scenery throughout. The route offers panoramic views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and other Himalayan peaks, which are enjoyed by Trekkers.

The most unforgettable moment in the trek is usually the sunrise ascent to Mardi Viewpoint (4,200 m / 13,780 ft). It is a memory of a lifetime to see the first sunlight shine on the snow-white mountains.

The next charm of the Short Mardi Himal Trek is the quiet surroundings. The trail is much less congested than certain other trekking tracks in the Annapurna region and offers a less intense experience. Trekkers are welcomed to the traditional teahouse lodges on the route, where simple rooms and home-cooked local meals are offered to comfort after a day on the track. This trek is very special, owing to the natural beauty, mountain culture, and the silent trails.

When carefully planned, with good guides and well-organized logistics, this Himalayan adventure can be safely and comfortably experienced by travelers. My Everest Trip (MET) takes care of transport, permits, lodging, and professional guides, allowing you to concentrate on the stunning scenery of the Short Mardi Himal Trek.

Short Mardi Himal Trek – 4 Days Itinerary

The Short Mardi Himal Trek starts with a scenic drive from Pokhara to the trek’s starting point in the Annapurna region, Kande. The road is approximately an hour long and crosses through some villages, green hills, and terraced fields. From Kande, the trekking path begins with a level uphill section of stone steps and small mountain trails.

The higher the walk, the better the views of the surrounding hills. After a certain period, you arrive at Australian Camp at approximately 2,060 m / 6,759 ft, a tourist attraction site where most trekkers take tea and photographs. On sunny days, the mountains of Annapurna can be observed from this point.

Then the path also leads into thick oak, bamboo, and rhododendron woods. The walk is relaxing and enjoyable because it takes place in a peaceful forest. Having spent a few hours walking, you reach Forest Camp, at 2,080 m / 6,824 ft, a quiet spot in the midst of dense woods where you spend the night.

The second day of the Short Mardi Himal Trek starts with a gradual ascending experience through scenic forest trails after breakfast at the Forest Camp. The trail goes over thick rhododendrons and evergreen trees, making the path cool and peaceful. In the spring, flowers grow in the forest, transforming it into color.

As you continue uphill, the forest is slowly growing finer, and small areas start to open up, giving you a view of the mountains around. After several hours of hiking, you arrive at Low Camp at approximately 2,970 m / 9,744 ft, where a large number of the trekkers take a break for tea and also view the Machhapuchhre.

Low Camp trails further up the ridge to High Camp. The scenery becomes more open, and the atmosphere cools as one ascends. Afternoon, you reach the High Camp, 3,580 m / 11,745 ft. This camp is very impressive with a mountain view and serene surroundings. Before the early morning hike tomorrow, a good rest is important.

The most exciting day of the Short Mardi Himal Trek is day three. You get up early in the morning and start hiking up from the High Camp. The path runs gradually up a steep rocky ridge, and the sky grows gradually brighter.

In a few hours of walking, you arrive at Mardi Viewpoint at 4,200 m / 13,780 ft. Here, there are breathtaking views of the Machhapuchhre and Annapurna mountain range in the sunrise. The snow-topped mountains shine in the golden light on a clear day.

Experienced trekkers may then proceed to Mardi Himal Base Camp at an elevation of approximately 4,500 m / 14,764 ft, provided the weather and trail conditions are favorable. Once you are done with the sightseeing and have taken some photographs, you get back to the High Camp where you have breakfast.

At a later stage, the trek proceeds downwards along the ridge to Badal Danda. By afternoon, you are at Badal Danda, at approximately 3,210 m / 10,531 ft, where clouds are likely to be floating beneath the ridge.

On this final day, the trek begins at Badal Danda, a beautiful ridge with mountain views all around. You start by having breakfast, and then you start down into the woods toward Sidhing village, via forest tracks.

It is a path through thick rhododendron and bamboo woods. Certain parts may be steep; in this case, trekking slowly with trekking poles may be beneficial. The further you get down, the warmer it gets and the greener the vegetation.

As you go, you will pass by tiny streams, silent woods, and local people passing by the road. This last walk is pleasant because of the quiet surroundings, unlike the days when we had to hike higher.

After hours of walking, you get to Sidhing village at approximately 1,280 m / 4,199 ft. It can be reached by taking a jeep drive back to Pokhara. This Short Mardi Himal Trek is concluded with stunning recollections of the scenery and mountains.

Short Mardi Himal Trek – 4 Days Additional Information

Climate, Weather Patterns & Best Climbing Seasons

The Short Mardi Himal trek can be done in various seasons, but spring and autumn are the most comfortable and popular ones. March to May is spring, when the weather is warmer, and rhododendron forests bloom along the trail.

The autumn months of October through December are clear with a good view of the mountain, particularly higher elevations such as High Camp at 3,580 m / 11,745 ft and Mardi Viewpoint (4,200 m / 13,780 ft).

The trek can be made throughout the year, although rain and muddy paths are common during monsoon seasons, in the lower forests, and leeches are also a problem. Snow and cold winds may occur in winter at altitudes of 3,580 m / 11,745 ft and higher.

Since the Short Mardi Himal Trek rises in altitude quickly, clear weather conditions are beneficial for a safe walk along the ridge and for sunrise.

Altitude Profile & Acclimatization Strategy

The Short Mardi Himal Trek can be completed in a short period of time. The trail begins at Forest Camp (2,080 m / 6,824 ft), ascends to the High Camp (3,580 m / 11,745 ft), and then to the viewpoint, some 4,200 m / 13,780 ft. Some proceed further to the Mardi Base Camp at 4500m / 14764 ft under normal conditions.

Trekkers must move gradually and have frequent rest since the altitude increases rapidly. Consuming water, maintaining good eating habits, and getting enough sleep help the body adapt to increased altitude. Symptoms such as headache, dizziness, or nausea cannot be overlooked.

My Everest Trip (MET) guides promote taking slow steps, adequate hydration, and warm clothes at night. When the symptoms intensify, the best thing to do is to go to a lower altitude.

Physical Requirements and Training

The Short Mardi Himal Trek is an option for individuals with a moderate level of fitness who can walk between 5 and 7 hours a day. The route features sharp ascents and low ridges.

The Short Mardi Himal Trek can be made much easier with proper preparation before the trek. Good exercises like brisk walking, climbing stairs, and hiking with a light pack contribute to stamina. Some exercises that may be performed include squats, lunges, and calf raises, as they strengthen the knees and legs, which will be handy during the descent of higher ground.

It is also important to be mentally prepared. It is better to walk slowly and maintain a steady rhythm rather than rush. My Everest Trip (MET) can also organize a slower itinerary with an additional night at a location near Low Camp if the trekkers are willing to make a comfortable adjustment to the altitude.

Teahouse Accommodation and Food Availability

In the Short Mardi Himal Trek, the trekkers will be accommodated in simple mountain lodges and teahouses. These lodges offer simple yet comfortable rooms that have twin beds, blankets, pillows, and a mattress. Overnight stops along the trail include places such as Forest Camp (2,080 m / 6,824 ft) and High Camp (3,580 m / 11,745 ft).

The dining hall in each lodge is a social space where trekkers have meals and rest after a day of walking. Food is simple, nutritious, and suitable for constant consumption throughout the day. Some popular meals include dal bhat, fried rice, noodles, soups, eggs, pancakes, and porridge.

The higher you go on the Short Mardi Himal Trek, the smaller the menus are, and prices are a little higher because supplies are carried uphill by mules or porters.

Visa Requirements, Permits & Official Documentation

A visitor to Nepal typically receives a tourist visa at Tribhuvan International Airport. The usual visa costs are USD 30, 50, and 125 for 15, 30, and 90 days, respectively.

To walk in the Annapurna, you will require an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Such a permit assists in conservation activities and local communities in the area. The Trekkers also need a TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) card for safety and to track them.

These permits enable visitors to visit the mountainous region. My Everest Trip (MET) will sort out the necessary files to enable you to relax and partake in the Short Mardi Himal Trek without the paperwork hassle.

Health Protocols, Safety Standards & Emergency Response

The Short Mardi Himal Trek is sensitive to health and safety since the route is at a high altitude. Trekkers climb steadily to High Camp at 3,580 m / 11,745 ft, and sometimes continue to viewpoints around 4,200 m / 13,780 ft within a few days.

The most effective methods for preventing altitude sickness are walking slowly, drinking sufficient water, and taking frequent breaks. Properly layered clothing and staying warm at night are also ways the body adapts to altitude.

When the symptoms, such as headache, nausea, or dizziness, are more intense, the most appropriate course of action would be to go to a lower level. My Everest Trip (MET) guides are trained to observe trekkers and act immediately if a health problem arises. Helicopter evacuation is included in case of an emergency on the Short Mardi Himal Trek.

Ground Transfers & Logistics

The Short Mardi Himal Trek usually begins and ends in Pokhara, which makes travel logistics easy. On day one, trekkers take a ride from Pokhara to Kande and start trekking. This brief shift on the road saves time and allows the trek to be completed within four days.

You arrive at Sidhing village (1,280 m / 4,199 ft) at the end of the trek, after hiking down to lower levels like Badal Danda (3,210 m / 10,531 ft). It will take approximately 2 hours to get to Pokhara by jeep on the way back from Sidhing.

Close communication between the drivers and guides helps ensure the schedule flows smoothly. My Everest Trip (MET) takes care of transportation so that people can enjoy the Short Mardi Himal Trek without worrying about travel arrangements.

Travel & High-Altitude Insurance Requirements

The Short Mardi Himal Trek strongly recommends travel insurance, as the trail reaches high altitudes. The trek typically reaches heights approaching 4,200 m / 13,780 ft, and a few trekkers go all the way to Mardi Base Camp at approximately 4,500 m / 14,764 ft.

Trekking up to these levels and emergency evacuation should be included in your insurance policy. The Himalayas might necessitate a helicopter rescue if someone falls seriously ill or is injured.

A printed copy of the insurance information should be given to the guides, and emergency contacts should be saved on their phones. My Everest Trip (MET) guides can help coordinate emergency services, should they be required, although every visitor needs to ensure their policy covers high-altitude trekking before starting the Short Mardi Himal Trek.

Route Variations & Alternative Options

The general itinerary for the Short Mardi Himal Trek takes 4 days, though the plan is flexible based on comfort, weather, and acclimatization. Some trekkers choose to extend the trek to make it slower.

Staying one more night near Low Camp (approximately 2,970 m / 9,744 ft) and proceeding to High Camp (3,580 m / 11,745 ft) is one option. This helps the body adapt to altitude.

The other variation concerns the choice of hiking level for the third day. Most trekkers reach either Mardi Viewpoint (4,200 m / 13,780 ft) or Mardi Base Camp (4,500 m / 14,764 ft) when the weather is favorable. My Everest Trip (MET) can tailor the Short Mardi Himal Trek itinerary to the comfort of each trekker.

Personal Expenses & Budget Planning

Your trekking package typically includes accommodation and main meals on the Short Mardi Himal Trek, although personal expenses must be budgeted for. Numerous teahouses tend to raise the prices of tea, coffee, bottled water, snacks, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and phone charging. These expenses may be a little higher in higher camps, such as the High Camp, due to the transportation of supplies by porters or mules.

Porters and guides are also likely to receive tips after the trek. It is up to your discretion, but this is worth considering when you are making your travel budget. Bring enough cash in Nepali rupees since there are no ATM in the trail. Before the beginning of the Short Mardi Himal Trek, it is easier to exchange or withdraw money in Pokhara.

Language, Cultural Insights & Communication

The Short Mardi Himal Trek cuts through areas dominated by the Gurung and Magar. You can experience this culture through local food, traditional homes, and friendly hospitality in villages along the trail. Greetings are usually warm when walking in areas such as Forest Camp (2,080 m / 6,824 ft) and High Camp (3,580 m / 11,745 ft).

Even something as basic as a greeting, such as Namaste, is welcome and can usually leave one with a smile. Being respectful toward the elderly and seeking their consent before taking photographs are also civilized cultural practices.

Your guide also assists with communication with lodge owners and locals, ensuring there are no hitches in day-to-day arrangements. This assistance is helpful during the Short Mardi Himal Trek, when meals, accommodation, and updates on small trails need to be managed.

Seasonal Festivals Along the Trail

When you are in Nepal during the festival seasons, you are likely to have a unique cultural experience. The largest Hindu festival in the country, Dashain, normally lasts two weeks and is marked by family meetings, blessings, and other traditional ceremonies.

Transportation and travel services may be congested during festivals, when many families return to their hometowns. It is advisable to plan your travel to Pokhara before starting the trek.

Trails through villages can be peaceful, even during a festival.

Even if you may not arrive in the villages during a big celebration, the welcoming community feel of the nearby villages usually makes the Short Mardi Himal Trek an unforgettable cultural experience.

Private vs Group Joining

The Short Mardi Himal Trek can be undertaken either as a private trek or as a group journey. The solo trek is more liberal. You will move at your own pace, take photo breaks when you wish, and relax wherever you want. This may come in handy when climbing to higher camps.

Group joining is another option for travelers who prefer a more reasonable, more social experience. Traveling with other people in the forest will give you the chance to share stories, eat food together, and help one another during the morning hike to the viewpoint.

Both alternatives are suitable for the Short Mardi Himal Trek. Deciding between the two will depend on your travel style, schedule, and budget.

Connectivity, Mobile Network & Charging Facilities

Connectivity on the Short Mardi Himal Trek can vary across locations and weather conditions. Most of the area may have mobile signal coverage, but the camps on higher ridges might have weaker signals. The lower stops, such as Forest Camp (2,080 m / 6,824 ft), are usually more connected than the higher locations, such as High Camp (3,580 m / 11,745 ft).

Most teahouses offer Wi-Fi for an additional fee, but the speed can vary depending on the number of devices connected. Devices can be charged via electricity or solar power for a small fee.

A power bank can be useful in charging phones or cameras, particularly when it is cold. Before the start of the Short Mardi Himal Trek, offline maps and essential contacts can be downloaded in Pokhara.

Photography, Filming & Drone Regulations

A wide range of beautiful photo opportunities is available on the Short Mardi Himal Trek. Sunrise views from the ridge at 4,200 m / 13,780 ft, including Mardi Viewpoint, often provide beautiful views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna mountain range.

They are usually permitted to take regular photos along the trail; however, it is also advisable to request permission before taking close-up shots of local people in villages. Observing local culture will ensure healthy relations with the community.

In Nepal, the use of drones is more strictly regulated. In lots of the guarded zones, drones must have special authorization before takeoff. Anyone intending to conduct aerial filming during the Short Mardi Himal Trek needs to obtain the necessary permits in advance and adhere to the government guidelines.

Essential Advice for First-Time Visitors

The Short Mardi Himal Trek is an excellent introductory trek in the Himalayas. The trek is not quite that long, yet it has remarkable vistas. Due to the rapid increase in the route, a gradual yet steady walk is significant.  It is important to pack the right attire, such as a warm base layer, a fleece jacket, and a windproof jacket, to stay in control of the ever-changing temperatures.

Exercise: drink plenty of water, eat regular meals, and get enough sleep every evening. If you experience a headache, nausea, or dizziness, you should notify your guide. Pacing yourself and taking good care of your body will ensure the Short Mardi Himal Trek is safe and enjoyable.

Packing List and Gear Checklist

The Short Mardi Himal Trek is more comfortable with the well-planned packing list. Because the weather can fluctuate rapidly between the lower hills and higher camps, it is important to have a good set of layers. Carry moisture-wicking base layers, warm-up fleece, and a down jacket in case it is chilly in the morning.

Hiking shoes with good grip are necessary for trekking through steep terrain and walking down to lower villages. Trekking poles may help ease pressure on the knees and balance in confined areas.

A power bank, a headlamp, a reusable water bottle, and simple first-aid kits are also useful. Bring with you copies of your passport and trekking permits. Getting the proper equipment is one of the factors that can make the short Mardi Himal Trek experience a success and enjoyable.

Responsible Travel and Sustainable Trekking

The Short Mardi Himal Trek is located within a conservation area; thus, responsible practices during the trek are significant. One way to prevent wasting on the trail is to carry a reusable water bottle. Minor littering, including wrappers and tissues, should not be thrown in the wild and must be disposed of in a proper place.

It is also important to support local communities. Accommodation in local teahouses and local meals will help support mountain families. Do not disturb wildlife, maintain a distance, and avoid making loud noise in forests and villages.

Respecting the culture is also important. Treating the locals in a polite manner and requesting permission to take pictures before doing so can help preserve good relations.

The slow pace of trekking and mindful walking around places such as the High Camp (3,580 m / 11,745 ft) will make the Short Mardi Himal Trek a pleasure for visitors and local people alike.
