Trip Overview
Bhutan offers travelers a chance to experience quiet mountain valleys, historic monasteries, and high Himalayan landscapes in a single journey. This 10-day itinerary begins in Paro, continues through Thimphu and Punakha, and includes several days of trekking through the Dagala mountain region. The Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek is the main trekking experience, with time before and after the trek for cultural sightseeing and road travel.
The journey starts in Paro, where you will have time to visit Rinpung Dzong, Ta Dzong, Kyichu Lhakhang, and Paro town. The following day is dedicated to the hike to Taktshang Monastery, commonly called Tiger’s Nest. These first two days provide a relaxed introduction to Bhutan before the itinerary moves into the mountains.
After the Paro sightseeing program, we will drive toward Geynekha, where the main trekking section begins. The trail initially passes through blue pine, oak, and rhododendron forests. As we gain elevation, the forest gradually gives way to open meadows and higher mountain terrain before reaching Gur.
The next stage takes us toward Labatama, the journey’s main high-altitude camping area. Here, the Bhutan Thousand Lakes Trek takes on a more alpine character, with open grazing areas, rocky sections, and several lakes around the campsite.
A separate exploration day is included at Labatama. We will visit Relitsho, Hentsho, Jametsho, and other nearby alpine lakes at a comfortable pace. This day is also important for acclimatization because the campsite is around 4,300 m according to the supplied itinerary.
From Labatama, the Dagala Trek continues toward Panka. The trail climbs to a higher ridge before descending toward the next camping area. The higher route section reaches around 4,500 m according to the client-supplied information. On clear days, the ridge can offer views of several Himalayan peaks, though visibility always depends on the weather.
The final trekking day takes us from Panka toward Talakha and Chamgang. Once the walking section ends, we will continue by vehicle to Thimphu. The remaining days are spent traveling by road in Bhutan, visiting Dochula Pass, Chimi Lhakhang, and Punakha Dzong before heading back to Paro.
My Everest Trip will arrange transportation, accommodation, trekking support, and sightseeing services based on the finalized itinerary. Our team will also provide practical information about the trekking route, equipment, weather, and altitude before you begin the mountain section.
The Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek suits travelers looking for a mix of trekking and cultural sightseeing. It is not a technical climbing trip, but the route includes high elevation, several hours of walking, and camping in tents. Good preparation and a steady walking pace will make the journey more comfortable.
Route Overview
The Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek starts after the road journey from Paro to Geynekha. From the trailhead, the route climbs through forests toward Gur before continuing into higher terrain.
The second trekking stage reaches Labatama, where the landscape opens up. The following day is used for lake exploration and acclimatization.
After Labatama, we will cross a higher section of the route before descending to Panka. The final trekking day continues toward Talakha and Chamgang, where the mountain section ends.
From Chamgang, the journey continues by road to Thimphu. We will then travel through Dochula Pass to Punakha before returning through Thimphu to Paro.

Why Choose 10 Days Bhutan with Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek?
The Bhutan Thousand Lakes Trek is a good option for travelers who want to see a different side of Bhutan beyond the main cultural centers. The journey spends several days away from roads and towns, allowing you to experience the mountain environment at a slower pace.
The itinerary also gives enough time for sightseeing before and after the trekking section. You don’t have to choose between a cultural Bhutan tour and a mountain journey because both are included in the same program.
A dedicated acclimatization day at Labatama is another useful feature. Rather than moving camp every day, we will spend an additional night in the same area and explore the surrounding lakes at a relaxed pace.
The Dagala Trek also provides a mixture of landscapes. The route begins in forest, reaches open alpine country and then descends through mountain villages and forest toward Chamgang.
For travelers interested in Himalayan views, the higher sections can provide wide mountain panoramas when weather conditions are favorable. The views should always be considered weather-dependent.

Taktshang is located high above Paro Valley and is an important cultural site. After spending time at the monastery, we will make our way back down to the valley.

Day 05: Labatama Lake Exploration and Acclimatization
Today we will remain at Labatama rather than moving to another campsite. The day gives you time to explore the high mountain environment while allowing your body additional time to adjust to the elevation.
The Dagala Trek includes several alpine lakes around Labatama. We will explore Relitsho, Hentsho and Jametsho, along with other smaller lakes in the surrounding area.
The walking is kept at a comfortable pace. There is time for photographs, short nature walks and observation of the surrounding grazing areas. Depending on the season, yak herding activity may also be visible.
This additional day at elevation is useful before the higher ridge section toward Panka. We will return to the same camp after the exploration rather than packing and moving again.
The evening can be spent resting and preparing for the following day’s walk. Our guide will explain the route toward Panka and the expected walking conditions. Overnight at Labatama.

According to the client supplied itinerary, the higher section reaches around 4,500 m. The trail is more exposed here than the earlier forest sections, so wind, cloud and temperature can affect the walking conditions.
On a clear day, the higher ridge can provide views toward several Himalayan peaks. These may include Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, Kanchenjunga and, depending on visibility, views toward Everest. Mountain views are entirely dependent on weather conditions.
After reaching the higher section, we will descend toward Panka. The route passes through open mountain terrain and areas associated with yak grazing. The supplied itinerary gives around 8 km of walking and approximately four to five hours for the day. Overnight at a tented camp in Panka.

The route covers approximately 14 km and usually takes around 6 to 8 hours, depending on trail conditions and walking pace. The trekking section finishes around Chamgang.
Once we reach the road, our vehicle will meet us and we will continue to Thimphu. The hotel offers a good place to sleep after a few nights in tents. The evening is at ease after the mountain part. Overnight in Thimphu.

10 Days Bhutan with Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek Additional Information
Trek Difficulty and Physical Preparation
The Dagala Trek requires a good level of physical preparation. The main challenge comes from the combination of uphill walking, high altitude, uneven trails, and several days of trekking.
Technical climbing experience is not required for the standard itinerary. However, you should be comfortable walking for several hours and managing repeated uphill and downhill sections.
A good place to start is with regular walking. Weekend walks can increase endurance, whereas stair climbing and moderate strength exercises can train the legs on uneven mountain trails.
The Bhutan Thousand Lakes Trek also requires camping at altitude, which means you need more than basic walking fitness. You should be comfortable sleeping in a tent, carrying a light daypack, and managing changing weather.
It is useful to break in your trekking shoes before the journey. New shoes can cause discomfort and blisters during longer walking days.
Best Time to Travel
Seasonal weather can affect the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek, especially in the higher sections of the route.
Spring and autumn are generally preferred periods for trekking. Spring brings changing vegetation and generally comfortable conditions in lower areas. Autumn often provides cooler conditions and good opportunities for mountain views when the weather is clear.
Summer can bring more rain and cloud, while winter can be very cold at higher elevations.
| Season | General Conditions | Trekking Consideration |
| Spring | Mild to cool | Good period for mountain trekking |
| Summer | Wetter and cloudier | Trails may be wet |
| Autumn | Cool and generally clear | Suitable for trekking |
| Winter | Cold | Requires strong cold-weather preparation |
Weather can change quickly regardless of season. The actual conditions during your trip will determine visibility and walking comfort.
Altitude and Acclimatization
Altitude is an important consideration on the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek. The route gradually moves from Paro into higher mountain terrain before reaching Labatama at around 4,300 m.
The higher route section toward Panka reaches around 4,500 m according to the client-supplied itinerary. This makes gradual adjustment important.
The Labatama acclimatization day is therefore an important part of the itinerary. We will explore the surrounding lakes at a relaxed pace before returning to the same camp.
Common altitude-related symptoms can include headache, tiredness, reduced appetite, and disturbed sleep. Any unusual or worsening symptoms should be reported to the guide.
Walking slowly, drinking enough water, and getting proper rest can help you manage the demands of high altitude.
Accommodation During the Trek
The Bhutan Thousand Lakes Trek uses a combination of hotel accommodation and tented camping.
Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha use hotels, depending on the confirmed package. During the trekking section, you’ll stay in tents at Gur, Labatama, and Panka.
The camping environment is naturally more basic than a city hotel. Nights can become cold, particularly around Labatama, so suitable sleeping equipment and warm clothing are important.
Labatama is the highest camping area in the itinerary. You will spend two nights in this general area because Day 5 is used for exploration and acclimatization.
Food and Meals
Meals are included according to the itinerary, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided during the journey.
During the Dagala Trek, meals are prepared with the practical requirements of mountain trekking in mind. Breakfast provides energy before walking, lunch supports the day’s activity, and dinner provides a chance to eat and rest after reaching camp.
Before departure, you can discuss vegetarian options and overall nutritional requirements. Travelers with strict dietary needs must provide this information.
Staying hydrated is especially important at high altitudes. Never leave a reusable water bottle at home, and follow the guide’s advice about water during the trek.
Permits and Travel Documents
Travelers must meet Bhutan entry requirements based on their nationality and travel dates. Before traveling, passport validity and other travel documents must be verified.
Trekking permits and other required approvals will be obtained based on Bhutanese law and the approved itinerary. The trek needs a certified Bhutanese guide.
Always carry your passport and other important documents. It’s also practical to have digital and physical copies of important documents.
Government fees and entry requirements can change, so always follow the arrangements in effect at the time of booking.
Transportation
Road transportation connects the major sections of the Bhutan Thousand Lakes Trek itinerary. We will drive from Paro to Geynekha at the beginning of the trekking section. Once the trek finishes around Chamgang, our vehicle will take us to Thimphu.
The journey then continues from Thimphu to Punakha through Dochula Pass before returning toward Thimphu and Paro.
Road travel times can change because of traffic, road conditions, and weather. Our team will coordinate the planned transfers according to the itinerary.

The trekking support team will help with camping arrangements as per the confirmed package.
We will discuss the next day’s plan at the end of each day to ensure you know the expected walking conditions and departure time.
The traveler is expected to communicate freely with the guide if they are exhausted or ill.
Health and Safety
The Bhutan Thousand Lakes Trek includes remote mountain sections, so preparation is important.
Bring your personal medication and a small first-aid kit. Also pack suitable footwear, warm clothing, sun protection, and rain protection.
Altitude symptoms should be reported rather than ignored. Severe or worsening symptoms require immediate attention.
You should also protect yourself from strong sun exposure at higher elevations by using sunscreen, sunglasses and a suitable hat.
The guide will provide practical assistance during the trek, but travelers should prepare appropriately before departure.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended for the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek. Enquire about the coverage of trekking at the altitudes covered by this itinerary in your policy.
Also check for medical treatment, emergency evacuation, and trip interruption coverage. Always keep your insurance details with you during the trip, and keep both a physical and electronic copy.

Mobile Network, Internet and Charging Facilities
Mobile coverage can be limited during the Dagala Trek, especially in remote mountain areas.
Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha generally provide better connectivity than the trekking camps. Don’t expect internet access throughout the mountain section.
A power bank is useful because charging opportunities may be limited while camping. Keeping your phone on airplane mode when there is no signal can help conserve battery.
Travelers should also inform family members that communication may be interrupted during the trekking section.
Cultural Etiquette and Responsible Travel
Bhutan has strong religious and cultural traditions. Visitors should dress respectfully and follow local instructions when visiting temples, monasteries, and dzongs.
During the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek, we will pass through mountain areas used for grazing and by local communities. Do not disturb animals or damage plants.
Ask permission before photographing local people. At religious sites, follow the guide’s advice about photography.
Please carry your waste until you reach a suitable disposal point. Keeping the mountain environment clean is part of responsible trekking.
Places to Visit
Paro Valley
Paro is the journey’s arrival and departure point. The valley includes several important cultural sites and serves as the setting for the first two days of the itinerary.
Rinpung Dzong
Rinpung Dzong is an important architectural site in Paro. Its large structure overlooks the valley and introduces travelers to Bhutanese religious and administrative architecture.
Taktshang Monastery
Taktshang Monastery is reached by an uphill forest trail. The hike takes several hours and provides both a cultural visit and a useful walking experience before the main trekking section.
Labatama Lakes
The alpine lakes around Labatama are a central feature of the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek. Relitsho, Hentsho and Jametsho are included in the exploration day.
Panka
Panka is a high mountain camping area reached after the ridge section from Labatama. The surrounding area includes open terrain and grazing grounds.
Dochula Pass
Dochula Pass lies between Thimphu and Punakha. The 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens are located here, and clear conditions may provide mountain views.
Punakha Dzong
Punakha Dzong stands at the meeting point of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. It is an important cultural site visited after the trekking section.
Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek vs. Other Bhutan Treks
The Bhutan Thousand Lakes Trek differs from shorter Bhutan walking routes because it combines several days of mountain camping with a dedicated acclimatization day and a higher-elevation section.
| Feature | Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek | Shorter Bhutan Treks |
| Duration | Several trekking days within a 10-day journey | Usually fewer trekking days |
| Highest Route | Around 4,500 m according to itinerary | Varies |
| Camping | Multiple nights | Depends on route |
| Alpine Lakes | Major feature | Depends on route |
| Acclimatization | Dedicated Labatama day | Depends on itinerary |
| Cultural Visits | Before and after trek | Varies |
| Physical Demand | Moderate to demanding | Varies |
| Mountain Environment | Forest, meadows, ridges and lakes | Depends on route |
The Dagala Trek is a suitable choice for travelers who want a more substantial mountain section while still having time for Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha.
Who Should Choose This Trek?
The Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek can suit travelers who enjoy walking, mountain scenery, and camping but also want cultural sightseeing during the same holiday.
It suits people prepared to walk for several hours and spend nights in tents at high elevation.
No prior technical climbing experience is required, but physical preparation is important.
The itinerary also works well for couples, friends, private groups, and travelers who want to combine a cultural Bhutan journey with a genuine mountain trekking experience.
Solo travelers can also discuss available arrangements with My Everest Trip.
Practical Tips for First-Time Trekkers
If this is your first high-altitude journey, preparation should begin several weeks before departure.
Start with regular walking and gradually increase the distance. Hill walking and stair climbing can help prepare your legs for the repeated uphill sections.
For the Dagala Trek, comfortable footwear is particularly important. Wear your trekking shoes before the trip so that they are properly broken in.
Keep your daypack light. Carry water, personal medication, warm layers, rain protection, sun protection and other essentials, but avoid unnecessary items.
Do not rush during the higher sections. A steady pace is usually more useful than trying to walk quickly.
Tell your guide if you feel unwell, especially if you develop symptoms that may be related to altitude.
